Have you ever wanted a fancy OppositeLock fire suit? Well here is your chance to have a virtual one on a virtual representation of yourself.
Have you ever wanted to run an endurance race? Like a real 24 hour endurance race with driver swaps and crew changes. Staying up until the weee hours of the morning. Building friendships with your teammates while you accomplish the common goal of not crashing. Well here is your chance. I am asking if anyone would be interested in forming a OppositeLock/Digital Burnouts team for the iRacing 24 Hours of Daytona?
The race is January 21st - 22nd, 2017 (Sat 9AM EST - Sun 10AM EST).
This team is being assembled for fun. You do not need to be Mark Webber. If you feel that you would be able to handle a GT3 or Daytona Prototype racecar for a couple hours without crashing too many times, this is the opportunity for you. The only restriction is that you must have a Class D 4.0 license or greater ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ).
This isn’t some 24 Hours of LeMons race in a 87 Celebrity...
For this to be a success and from past experience, I believe the team needs a minimum of 4 people (iRacing’s minimum is 2). The iRacing rulebook states that each driver must drive their “fair share,” this is defined as 1/4 of an equal share. For example, if we have 4 drivers, each driver must drive a minimum of 1.5 hours. Obviously, the more drivers we have, the shorter each person has to drive. If there are many people that want to participate, we can run a second car. The limit for an individual team is 16 drivers. If there is continued interest, we can participate in the many other endurance events throughout the year.
Opposite Lock... Get it...
Speaking of the car, the “totally not Porsche” RUF GT3 featured in its glorious OppositeLock livery, is not part of next year’s 24 hours. There will be a post later polling you, the Opponauts and Digital Burners, on what car(s) we should run.
Let me know if this is something you would be interested in doing?
You can’t tell me where to go...

Maybe, what are the system requirements?

Maybe at some point in the future once I have a good and dedicated setup for PC racing. I have been wanting to get into iRacing for some time. Not right now, though. January is still too uncertain.

That’s fine. I know a lot of people on here don’t play it and the startup costs are kind of steep.

I should note that a wheel, though not required, makes driving much easier.

No big deal. I know that start up is more than average.
For others reading, you don’t need a fancy wheel like a Logitech or anything, a simple 90 degree wheel will do just fine. Controllers are supported, but are not ideal for when the car gets squirrelly

I’m with Robo on this one. I would absolutely love to do this but I’m not sure my laptop could handle it. Especially since I have a wheel.

Can always try a one month pass and the free tracks/cars.

I’m interested, but I’d have to get my head around the Daytona road course first. I’m always too slow through T1

The game’s not too bad on resources really. The big thing is that the wheel truly is necessary and the service is expensive. You absolutely get what you pay for with it though.

I’m still pissed at iRacing for allowing controllers and tablets.

How long would it take me to get my license up if I started next week? And I’d be good with the 12C GT3 or R8 GT3, though I have no experience in iRacing I have experience in Assetto Corsa and Project CARS. We could run a prototype, but that would require a bit more practice.

It is highly dependent on your patience. This race requires a minimum D 4.0.
Assuming you are in rookies, drive the Miata and just make it around the track safely (don’t try to win). Do 4 races get your Safety Rating (SR) to 4.0 and get bumped to Class D. Repeat until you are Class D 2.0.
If you are dedicated it should take you a whole day. If you can’t put a whole day, maybe a week or so. The license system is quite lax if yo play it right.

Regarding the car, I am planning on creating a poll to see what the collective Oppo wants.
I work on that if we have sufficient interest.

I am not expecting anyone to be perfect. I certainly am not. I am too used to NASCAR and always let off way early and use light braking, I always expect it to lock up and slide through the corner.

eh, it is annoying, but it is what they need to do to attract users.
A controller though kind of limits yourself to what you can do. It is a natural barrier to progress to high levels; making a wheel upgrade almost necessary.

This is interesting, although I don’t have anything available that can handle gaming atm, so I’ll say I’d certainly be interested in the future if this keeps up.

I’m used to road courses and my car of choice is the Lotus 79, but I don’t want to be the guy to snap it while tail braking into T1. I’m pretty good at setups though, so could conceivably help with testing.

That would be great. I know how to make very slow stable sets, but not fast stable sets. Any input would be helpful.

It’s largely about finding the balance between the two. When I was doing the L79 consistently, the midfield and backmarker Lotus guys loved them because I was able to tune it to push a little on acceleration to reduce the chances of the back stepping out on exit. The aliens thought they were too stable and were generally a bit slower when trying them, but most people found their sets undriveable so there’s that.

Alright, I’ll see if I can track down a trial or something. Then I can get a membership this week and start practicing. I’m not Mark Webber, but I can avoid playing bumper cars.

Found a 3 month for $5 pass. I’ll be able to pick up the car we are using in the next week or so.

Great. Feel free to put me in the referral bwp1070 (at) hotmail (bonus monies for me). It looks like they have deactivated all of the free car deals which is a bummer.
It looks like there is enough interest to get a team together. I will create the car poll and post it after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I might be interested if there are enough Opponauts out there that have similar pace. I’m not a fan of pairing drivers with a wide range of speed. It’s then hard to find the right split to register for. Current iRating is around 5800. (which in my case is appropriately reflective of anything I practice for)

If you’re familiar with racing sims getting your license up to the point it needs to be is simple.

That is going to be a bit of a struggle. My Road iR is about 1500 mostly because I focus on NASCAR and do road just for grins and giggles. If there are enough people and depending on the disparity, we could run 2 cars.

Ironically I consider the MX-5 to be challenging to drive. I recommend learning to drive the Skip Barber after the MX-5 if you’re willing to put a few $’s into it. The Skip Barber really helps teach technique. After that pick what interests you, but don’t waste a bunch of $ on cars you’re curious about. I’ve found I’m only capable of being competitive in 1 car at a time.

I wasn’t planning on doing Daytona so soon after Le Mans, but if it is an oppo group I might put in a few stints. We did Le Mans as a 3 man team. Unfortunately our HPD got some damage to the under tray at the end of our first stint that cost us about a second a lap for the rest of the race. Was still a fun endevor since it was the top split.
